Conversations on Healthy Masculinity

What does healthy masculinity mean and why is it so important to have the conversation about what is means to “be a man”? We’ll explore all of that and more in this module that features a presentation from a community member and father. This module also features a panel of  community members, BBBS partners, and mentors who talk about their own experiences, reflections, and insights into discovering their own masculinity and how their work, mentors, families, and own circles have been a part of that journey.

MAN BOX

This is a group activity for young men, that utilizes tools to gather the boys’ ideas on gender roles using a pre-assessment quiz and identify rules society has taught us about the roles of men and boys and women and girls. Click on the image below!

MANHOOD 2.0

The premise of Manhood 2.0 is that being aware and conscious of how we in our society are raised within the confines of restrictive ideas about gender is not only a necessary, but also a liberating experience. The approach is rooted in popular education, in feminist collective action (intersectional feminism in particular), and in the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. Freire espoused the idea of collective consciousness-raising among those oppressed by the many ways in which people are marginalized – through racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, ableism, and so forth. We take this work further by not only supporting young men to recognize ways in which power and oppression manifest in their lives, but also providing them with opportunities to practice skills to create healthier relationships, positive social networks, and nonviolent communities.

LIVE RESPECT

Live Respect is a program that takes place over  several weeks. Throughout this curriculum you we will be talking about messages that society sends us about manhood, masculinity, relationships, and sex, and there may be times when we use sensitive language or language we wouldn’t normally use. This is allowed as long as we are using language to further the conversation and not to tease, make others uncomfortable, or show off.
