Saskatoon, SK — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon (BBBS) and Indigenous Sport Saskatchewan (ISS), are excited to announce the launch of the Nîkânîwin Leadership Program—a brand-new mentorship initiative created to support Indigenous youth in Saskatchewan. This program, which is all about community, culture, and connection, brings together the strengths of the organizations to empower Indigenous youth in a meaningful way.
The Nîkânîwin Program—named after the Cree word for “leadership” or “progression”—combines BBBS’s mentorship experience with ISS’ (comprised of representatives from Sask Sport, FSIN, and Metis Nation Saskatchewan) cultural and community expertise. Together, we’re creating a space where Indigenous youth can build confidence, grow as leaders, and connect with their culture through group mentorship.
Starting with pilot programs in Saskatoon last fall, the Nîkânîwin Leadership Program will expand across Saskatchewan in 2025. The program is designed as a group experience, where small cohorts of youth ages 8-12 will gather for sessions led by mentors who bring a passion for supporting Indigenous youth. From learning cultural teachings to engaging in sports and community activities, Nîkânîwin offers a unique blend of guidance, growth, and celebration of Indigenous heritage.
“This partnership brings together our shared commitment to making sure Indigenous youth feel supported and seen,” said Kim Megyesi, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters Saskatoon. “With Sask Sport, FSIN, and Metis Nation Saskatchewan by our side, we’re thrilled to launch the Nîkânîwin Leadership Program and offer youth a place where they can build leadership skills and connect with their cultural roots.”
“We’re all in this together, working to create spaces where our Indigenous youth can thrive,” added Amy Shipley, Participation in Sport Lead, Sask Sport. “By teaming up, we’re able to provide a mentorship experience that reflects their identities, values, and dreams.”
“This is more than just a mentorship program—it’s about helping our youth see the possibilities for their future while staying rooted in their culture,” said Jason Boucher, Sport Coordinator, Metis Nation Saskatchewan. “We’re proud to support a program that opens doors for our young people and our communities.”
We’re deeply grateful to our founding sponsors for making this possible: Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation, K+S Potash, McCall MacBain Foundation, First Nations & Métis Community Partnership Project, Sask Sport, FSIN, and MNS.
