“This is my 5th year as an In-School mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon and Area and it has been the most life-changing experience.
Many mentors sign up because they want to make a difference in the life of their mentee, but I never imagined that my Mentee would have such a huge impact on my life. I’ve formed such an amazing friendship with my Mentee and I’ve been able to watch her grow into a remarkable and resilient young woman.
As an In-school Mentor, (pre-Covid), I would visit her at school for an hour every week. We would play board games, do arts & crafts, bake cookies, and have the occasional ice cream or pizza party. We’ve been able to keep in touch virtually over the past few months, and I’m so grateful to see her smile and laugh, even through a computer screen! ⠀
As I work towards my degree in Education, it’s been amazing to get some in-school experience from the perspective of a mentor. And it’s been awesome to see the impact of mentoring on school engagement and attendance. ⠀⠀
What has been extra special about my mentoring experience, has been doing it alongside some of my best friends. How could you go wrong with playing board games and eating ice cream sundaes with your friends while also hanging out with some pretty cool and hilarious kiddos? The Big Brothers Big Sisters Staff and the staff at the school are all extraordinary individuals and their passion for igniting the potential of youth inspires me every single day! Very thankful for my little BBBS family.” – Jaden, Mentor
